This church by itself is incredible, but it also has secrets that were only uncovered over a century ago. Along with your private expert guide, you'll gain access to a staircase that takes you to an IV century church that was built directly below the current one just after the legalization of Christianity.
You will rediscover lost frescoes about Christian martyrs and important saints that date back to over a thousand years ago. See one of the first examples of the modern Italian language in written form, a full two centuries before Dante made the language famous. But there are still more secrets to uncover on this Roman catacombs tour. Walk down yet another level to discover a lost Mithraeum and hear the truth behind pagan worship in Rome and one of the main competitors to Christianity in the early years. As impossible as it sounds, your final descent will lead you to 60ft. below the current ground level and into an ancient Roman house. You are now at the level of the underground water springs and will not only hear but also see, running water from the original Roman waterways.
Ancient Roman Pagans didn't believe in any hope after death. They went to a "Necropolis" or "City of the Dead" and the story ended there. Christians believed that when they died, they went to a resting place until resurrected - known as a coemeterium. Either way, Roman law forbade being buried in the city center so our journey continues in an air-conditioned vehicle and you're taken to the Christian catacombs of Domitilla, about 15 minutes outside the city. This is one of the best catacombs to visit in Rome.
Your private guide will dispel some myths surrounding early Christianity including: All Roman Emperors wanted to kill Christians and that Christians used to hide in the Catacombs during persecutions. You will also learn that the symbol of the cross was not used in early Christianity and the real reason why the symbol of the fish was used.
Get ready to experience a church built underground in honor of two Roman soldiers who preferred a brutal death to simply praying to the Roman Emperor. Early Christianity will unveil more of its secrets to you as you pass through the narrow corridors and see the final resting places of hundreds of thousands of early Christians. Here you will find heart-warming epitaphs to the departed, fourth-century frescoes of saints and witness a painting of Jesus Christ that will change your mind forever of what Jesus Christ actually looked like.
The great city of Rome was under attack in the third century by strong barbarians who desired the same, luxurious lifestyle that the Romans had. To protect the city, the Emperor Aurelian built a defensive wall which surrounded the entire city. Not only will you be able to see this wall on your way to the Catacombs, but you will also get a chance to walk a small stretch of the Ancient Appian Way. This main road going South was built in 312 B.C. and has witnessed such events as St. Peter meeting Jesus on his way to escaping and also the crucifixion of 10,000 slaves during the revolt of Spartacus.
There are the must-see main attractions in Rome, but there are also many other things to do during your vacation. Christina was very knowledgeable about the sights and the history of Rome. We were walking through time as we toured the Basilica as the site has 4 layers of buildings starting from 100 BC. Each layer has ben excavated. In the catacombs, she provided insight to the lives of the early Christians who lived there. I recommend this tour as 1) our guide was very knowledgeable (allowing for an appreciation of the life and times of the people) and 2) the group was small (allowing time for discussion and questions).
I highly recommend the tour. The Basilica, because of the history of the location) is one of the hidden secrets for Rome...more

This one was my favorite bc it was so off the beaten path. San Clemente is super cool. Catacombs are great too and way out of town. Walking on Appian way was the best for me though. Just thinking that Caesar walked on those same roads made is a great experience. Guide spoke great english and I think our driver was born behind the wheel of a car. He found a way around traffic like it was no problem. ..more
