On the way to the Sistine Chapel, our local guide will spend about 1 hour taking you through the most incredible galleries in the Vatican museums. You’ll spend almost an hour exploring the Candelabra Gallery, Gallery of the Tapestries and our personal favorite, Gallery of the Maps.
Because you’ve enters the museums with early morning skip the line Vatican tickets, you’ll get to enjoy these galleries with a fraction of the amount of people who visit them during regular opening hours. This means our expert Vatican guide can introduce you to each important piece in these Vatican collections, with plenty of time for you to take photographs along the way.
Included within this immense collection of art, collected by Popes over the centuries, you’ll get to see the world's largest pictorial geographical study, in the form of maps painted on the walls of a gallery by friar Ignazio Danti of Perugia. You’ll also come face to face with some artistic illusions, hand-made tapestries and peculiar statues, all of which telling the stories and progression of art across centuries.
After visiting the best of the Vatican galleries, our guide will lead you straight to the Sistine Chapel. Since the Sistine Chapel is a place of worship, you are prohibited to speak inside, yet The Roman Guy guides are well prepared to make sure you have all the information and stories you need to help bring this incredible room to life.
Prior to entering the Chapel, you will be given a detailed description of what to look out for while inside. All of our guides use visual aids during this explanation and provide you with a personal handout and map to make reference to as you gaze at the masterpieces yourself. Upon entering the Chapel, our guide will give you 20 minutes of free time to admire Michelangelo's masterpiece that adorns the walls.
Michelangelo dedicated 10 years of his life to this masterpiece and, as you’ll find out, it wasn’t all plain sailing. Now that the Chapel has been restored, you can see every detail and colour used to create one of the most treasured works of art to have ever been created by man.
It is important that you understand that you cannot re-enter the Sistine Chapel or Vatican Museums once we leave the Sistine Chapel for the Basilica. We have a special entrance to the Basilica that allows us to enter without waiting in line. If you want to stay in the Vatican Museums, you are welcome to leave the tour, but it would be your choice to skip the Basilica with our tour. If you do leave the tour, please return your headset to the tour guide or else you will be charged 50€ per headset.
With our Roman Guy Vatican guide, you’ll walk out of the Sistine Chapel and skip the line for the St. Peter’s Basilica! You’ll bypass the crowds lining up to enter through the regular front entrance, as you walk down a ramp and through a special gate on the side.
St. Peter's Basilica took approximately 120 years to build, spanning 20 popes and almost every famous Renaissance architect that you can think of, including Bramante, Raphael and Michelangelo. Hailed as the most beautiful church in the world and known by most as the epicentre of the Catholic religion, you’ll now get the chance to walk inside and enjoy a St Peter’s Basilica tour with our expert guide.
Once inside, you’ll be introduced to the highlights of St Peter’s. Some iconic stops inlace La Pietà by Michelangelo, "Baldacchino" by Bernini and the Papal Tombs. If you would like to stay in the St. Peter's Basilica longer DO NOT leave with the guide to take photos in the piazza. The security line is long and re-entry on your own is not recommended.
Our guides will bring you a step further, and walk you underneath the floor of St. Peter's Basilica where you will be able to visit the Tombs of hundreds of Popes throughout the history. You will learn the stories behind some of the most powerful men in the history and some of the most intriguing leaders of the Roman Catholic church, as well witness their tombs, carved by the hands of some of the best contemporary artists. Your tour will end in front of St. Peter's Basilica. From there you will be unable to return to the Vatican Museums. If you would like to spend more time inside the museums you will need to forgo the Basilica. Inform your guide at the beginning of the tour and remember not to go with the group to the Basilica of St. Peter or else you wont be able to re-enter the museums. If you would like to stay in the Basilica of St. Peter longer DO NOT leave with the guide to take photos in the piazza. You will be able to do that afterwards, but in order to return, the security line is long to and re-entry on your own is not recommended.
Want to climb St Peter's Dome? At the end of your tour, before leaving the Basilica, make sure you ask our guide where you can access St Peter's Dome. You can get an elevator part of the way, skipping over 300 steps, or climb the whole way to the top! Tickets cost between €5-€7, but trust us, the view is definitely worth the climb and small fee.

On Wednesday mornings, St Peter's Basilica is closed, so a visit to the Basilica is substituted with a visit to see some of the most iconic statues in the world, a gigantic bathtub and a broken statue that inspired Michelangelo all those years ago. Our guide will lead you through the Bramante Courtyard, designed by the famous painter and architect Bramante Lazzari, and take you up close to the Apollo Belvedere and Laocoon and Sons statues, dating between 40BC and 2nd Century AD.
You'll hear the myths and legends that inspired the design of these famous statues and imagining what it would be like to be wrapped in sea snakes before proceeding through more rooms in the Vatican museums. Next stop, a visit to a priceless work of art that inspired the works of Michelangelo, but can you guess why?
