ENGLISH SPEAKING LOCAL GUIDE
What makes this tour the best Vatican tour in Rome? Our Vatican tour tickets include skipping the line for admissions and we also enter a full hour before general public. We also go straight to the Sistine Chapel when it's practically empty. We then circle back through the Vatican Museums before re-entering the Sistine Chapel for yet another visit before heading to St. Peter's Basilica. Or, if your tour is on a Wednesday we will visit the Bramante Courtyard instead of St Peter's Basilica. This is because the Papal Mass takes place on Wednesday, closing St Peter's Basilica to the public and tour groups planning a morning visit.
What about the line to get into the St. Peter's Basilica? Every day, except Wednesdays, our English speaking Vatican guide will take you through a special door to the St. Peter's Basilica. This way you will not have to wait in the long lines to enter the Basilica.
The Vatican for every kind of traveler! Apart from this wonderful tour, we have other Vatican tours to suit every traveler's needs. If you're not a morning person, we offer a similar tour to this in the afternoon, Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Afternoon Tour. If 3.5 hours is too long for you, we also offer an Express Privileged Entrance Vatican Tour in the morning where you can see the best highlights in a shorter time.
Guide. Tickets and Admission are included.
Remember that the Sistine Chapel is inside the Vatican Museums and included in your Vatican tour tickets. As mentioned above, you'll enter the Vatican Museums a whole hour before the general public and go straight to the Sistine Chapel. Since the Sistine Chapel is a place of worship, you are prohibited to speak inside. The Roman Guy will provide a hand-out / map of the chapel so that you have a reference while your guide explains the significance of Michelangelo's artwork to you outside the Chapel. You can then also use this map when you are inside the chapel. You'll have at least 20 minutes to admire Michelangelo's masterpieces and really get a feel for where you are.
Imagine dedicating almost 10 years of your life to one masterpiece? Imagine braving the elements and still trying to paint - Your hands are so cold in the winter that you can barely feel the paintbrush; in the summer you can barely breathe from the suffocating heat. Now you can understand what Michelangelo, one of the most famous artists ever, endured during his struggle to make the most renowned art masterpiece the Western World has ever seen. Our expert Vatican guide will do their best to bring to life one of the most beautiful rooms you'll ever walk into.
After visiting the Sistine Chapel our local guide will take you back through the Vatican museums, where you'll spend almost 2 hours touring the Candelabra Gallery, Gallery of the Tapestries, Gallery of the Maps and Raphael Rooms. Then you'll have a second visit to the Sistine Chapel. It is important that you understand that you cannot re-enter the Sistine Chapel or Vatican Museums once we leave the Sistine Chapel for the Basilica. We have a special entrance to the Basilica that allows us to enter without waiting in line. If you want to stay in the Vatican Museums you are welcome to leave the tour, but it would be your choice to skip the Basilica with our tour and you will be unable to go through the special basilica entrance if you are not with our guide. If you do leave the tour, please return your headset to the tour guide or else you will be charged 50€ per headset.
What does the word Renaissance mean? Raphael was one of Rome's greatest and most famous artists who encompassed all of the ideals of the Renaissance man. He designed and frescoed multiple rooms connected to the Vatican Museums. You will not only be able to admire the beautiful works of art, but will also hear all of the behind-the-scene stories. You'll get to see one of his most famous works of art - The School of Athens - amongst other masterpieces.
Imagine walking into the most massive church you've ever seen, filled with artwork of all the most famous artists you've ever heard of! You walk in through the massive front entrance, without waiting in line, into what is considered the most opulent church in the world. Here you will see some highlights with your guide such as the Baldacchino, La Pieta, the Statue of St. Peter and other masterpieces.
St. Peter's Basilica took approximately 120 years to build, spanning 20 popes and almost every famous Renaissance architect that you can think of, including Bramante, Raphael and Michelangelo. Now you can better understand why it is hailed as the most beautiful church in the world!
We cannot mention enough that from the St. Peter's Basilica you will be unable to return to the Vatican Museums. If you would like to spend more time inside the museums you will need to forgo the Basilica on the tour. Inform your guide at the beginning of the tour and remember not to go with the group to St. Peter's Basilica or else you won't be able to re-enter the museums. If you would like to stay in the St. Peter's Basilica longer DO NOT leave with the guide to take photos in the piazza. The security line is long and re-entry on your own is not recommended. The guide will not explain much if anything from inside the piazza so we recommend you stay and explore on your own after finishing the tour.
Want to climb the Dome of St Peter's? Before leaving the Basilica at the end of your tour, ask our guide to point you towards where you can gain access to St Peter's Dome. It's quite a lcimb, but if you have time after your tour, then we highliy recommend it - the view is spectacular!
The Roman Guy gets VIP access, because he is a Vatican City accredited Tour Operator.
If you choose to take this tour on a Wednesday, then a visit to St Peter's Basilica is substituted with a visit to see two of the most iconic works of art in the world. These two statues are not only famous in their own right, but they sit within an octagonal courtyard designed by famous painter and architect - Bramante Lazzari. If you haven't guessed them already the statues we are referring to are: the Apollo Belvedere, Laocoon and his sons and the Belvedere Torso.
Our guide will explain the myths and legends associated with these mystical statues, before taking you to visit one of the biggest and oldest bathtubs you'll have ever seen. Once belonging to emperor Nero, you'll soon find out that this is more than just a tub to soak in. This tub stretches a whopping 25ft in diameter and is made from a material so precious that there is no way the tub can ever be recreated. NB: relaxing bubble baths are not included in this tour, although it would make for a great photo.

Keep in mind that there are still hundreds of people entering the Vatican at the same time you are on this tour. It's just better than the thousands who will be entering later. Also worth noting: this is a long tour with no chance to stop and sit. I have severe arthritis in my knees and this tour was pretty brutal on them... LOTS of stairs and 3+ hours of standing and walking. But it was worth it! There is so much to see that I wanted to go back the next day. This tour visits the Sistine Chapel first, and then passes through it again towards the end of the tour. You'll see the difference in the two visits! We could hardly walk through the crowds the second time.
One thing I loved about this tour is that while we were waiting in line to enter the Vatican, our tour guide showed us pictures of what we'd see in the Sistine Chapel and gave historical background/details. This was the perfect primer so that when we were inside, we could look at the frescos with more educated eyes. Our guide was entertaining, knowledgeable, and very experienced.
If I have one suggestion, it would be that you read up a little about St. Peter's Basilica before you go on your tour. It is so large and there isn't time enough to see it all. I wish I'd prepared better so I had a framework in which to fit all the information I was hearing, as well as to be able to choose what I wanted to spend time looking at. Be certain to stop and see the Pieta. It's mesmerizing.
The Roman Guy tours are excellent. We took two of their tours on this trip and would definitely use them again...more

It was a bit cold as we waited outside to enter the museum, but our guide did a great job of describing what we were about to go see. He was really knowledgeable. You don't get to spend too much time inside the Sistine Chapel so I am grateful I knew what to expect upon entering. After the formal tour, you have the opportunity to explore more, climb the dome, and visit the crypts. I would recommend this tour...more
