What is the best way to get from FCO Airport to Rome?

Elegant business lady in books a Rome airport transfer.

Home » What is the best way to get from FCO Airport to Rome?

Every airport is different. Some are well connected by trains and transit like London and others are a bit more antiquated. While Rome doesn’t rank with the likes of London or Paris for mass transit, there are a few quick and easy ways to get from your flight to Roma Centro.

Pro Tip:

  • If you want to remove the hassle of getting around Rome, secure your ride with Amico Limo services.
  • Bookmark our guide to Rome for more resources to help you plan your trip.

Transport Options from Fiumicino (FCO) Airport to Rome

Rome’s main airport for international flights is named Fiumicino, or FCO. It is home to all the major airlines and some low-cost airlines. Ciampino, or CIA, is also a decent-sized airport, but primarily for cheap flights like Ryan Air or EasyJet within Italy or Europe.

Fiumicino is connected to Rome by:

  • Train
  • Taxi
  • Bus
  • Transfer / Limo Service

So, which ones are the best?

How Do You Get From the Airport in Rome to Your Hotel?

After you exit baggage claim at FCO airport, there are signs everywhere.

Train

Train transit is a great budget option for a single traveler. It costs about 15€ each way per person. Then you’ll have to take a taxi, bus, or metro to your hotel. Bus/metro tickets are 1.50€ per person. A taxi could cost anywhere from 10€ to 20€ depending on many factors including if the driver enjoys ripping off tourists. Most drivers are cool, but one in ten is going to make up some new tariffs.

The direct train is named Leonardo Express, which goes to Termini station, Rome’s primary train and subway station. There is a cheaper train that goes to Trastevere Station, map out if that is closer to your accommodation.

Taxi vs Private Transfer

Once you compare the train to a taxi, 45€, it already almost makes sense for two people to hop in a taxi and shave off 30 minutes from your voyage and a bit of effort. Taxi rates are fixed at 45€, which may change over time, but it’s written on the back of the taxi driver’s seat in English. Ask the driver if they take credit card before you get in and plan to tip 5€ in cash or ask them to put it on the total before running your card–no tip line in Europe.

I own a tour company which makes the decision of taking a limo a bit easier, that said the cost is 80€ for two people, the driver won’t smoke, there are no additional fees, and you can book it before you arrive with your credit card. For me, it beats the smell of cigarettes smoke after a long overnight flight.

At my stage in life, I appreciate things being seamless and 80€ is pretty attractive rate to step off the plane and into a nice car. Amico Limo has been doing much of our transfer services around Rome since 2019 and we are delighted with customer feedback. Drivers speak English, don’t smoke, arrive early, and cars are very clean and new. You can book here with a credit card.

If you book a transfer, I recommend downloading whatsapp which is a great free way to communicate in Europe. Whatsapp is Europe’s main method of texting, compared to iMessage in USA/Canada, so downloading this is a pro tip.

Uber

Uber is pretty complicated at the Rome Aiport. While you can definitely use it in Rome to travel longer distances, maybe from the center to the beach or something of the sorts, I wouldn’t use it to get from the airport to the center.

Some additional laws in Italy don’t allow anyone to be an Uber driver; you need a limo license or NCC license, so I would either book ahead or take a taxi.

Bus

I have taken the bus to the airport when traveling solo and it was a super cheap option. Normally 6€ or so. There are a # of options that leave from Termin station, but I wouldn’t really recommend it to anyone other than a backpacker. If you follow the transport options in the airport you’ll find the bus depot and everything is pretty straight forward.

How Much Do You Tip Airport Transfers in Rome?

Rome, Italy at the Colosseum over the street at night.

Taxi or private transfer, normally 5€ to 10€ is greatly appreciated. If you are a larger group with lots of luggage you are welcome to tip more, but 10€ is excellent for a 40 min ride from Rome to FCO airport.

For longer voyages, Rome to Pompeii and back, consider 50€.
