Rome to Pompeii Tour
After meeting your trip leader and the rest of your small group, you'll start your day with a beautiful drive down the Autostrada del Sole (highway of the sun) to the excavated city of Pompeii. Enjoy watching the scenic countryside pass by, filled with lemon tree orchards and quaint little towns. At Pompeii, you'll meet your archaeologist guide, who'll help you skip the line to start exploring the remarkably well-preserved remains of this ancient metropolis.
Guided Tour of Pompeii
This UNESCO World Heritage site located south of Naples was covered almost instantly with 13-20 feet (4-6 meters) of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Literally frozen in time by volcanic ash, this ancient city is one of the most fascinating sites in Italy—and the world.
Led by your professional archaeologist guide, you'll walk through this once-thriving city and see how the well-preserved structures and evidence of daily life reveals secrets about Roman civilization. The city sat undisturbed for almost 2,000 years until a group of explorers discovered that it was still largely intact. As a result, we now have an unparalleled snapshot of life in the prosperous ancient city.
Free Afternoon in Sorrento
After you've finished exploring Pompeii, you'll meet your driver again and continue down the gorgeous winding roads of the Italian coast, along the Gulf of Naples and on to Sorrento. Before you set off to explore the town on your own, your trip leader will explain some of the many things you can do and see in this beautiful part of the Amalfi Coast.
You'll have free time on your own to leisurely explore the center of this charming coastal gem, enjoy a typical local lunch, and indulge in some gelato or famous limoncello. Then, after a long day of sightseeing, culture, and history, meet up with your small group again and relax on the scenic drive back to the Eternal City.
Why Sorrento instead of Positano? Both are famous, beautiful hillside towns on what is one of the world's most scenic coastlines. However, Sorrento happens to be nearly an hour closer to Rome, which gives you with more time to explore and less time on the road.

Sorrento in December

I would give this tour 3 stars because our Pompeii tour was absolutely amazing. We met a tour guide there, Sasha- and he was excellent. However, this tour was only 1.5 hours of our 14 hour day. 20 people were crammed into a van and we had very little room to move or store our backpack. We were informed on our way that pretty much everything was closed in Sorrento due to it being off season. We were not aware of this when booking. So our time in Sorrento was really just walking around and enjoying the scenery- but it was freezing and rainy. Over half of the restaurants/ shops were closed. Due to restaurants being closed, we were strongly advised to purchase a pizza combo at a restaurant in Pompeii and eat it on the van. We did, the guide took our order prior to the tour and it was terrible. 15 EU per person for sub-par pizza and trying to eat it on the van was awful. There was no room to move, let alone eat out of a medium sized pizza box….. Also, the restaurant did not want to accept cards, which was not communicated and caused problems with some people who did not have cash on hand. Communication with our tour guide was not good. He did not inform of the restaurants cash only situation or that at a restroom stop, we would not be returning to the van prior to the Pompeii tour. Several people on the tour, including ourselves, left umbrellas, and IDs on the van with no option to return prior. We did get caught in a rainstorm on the tour, and without our umbrellas on the van, we all got soaked and our guide just laughed it off… We have booked several tours with the Tour Guy for our Europe trip and they have all been fantastic other than today. For the price, the overall experience was very disappointing and felt like a waste of a day.
Need more time in Pompeii, less in Sorrento

The tour of the archaeological site was great. The tour guid was very knowledgeable and fun to listen to. However, he needs to slow down! He walked too fast between stops, especially at the end, we practically had to run back to the entrance. I would prefer we take some of the time we spent in Sorrento and allow more time at the archaeological site instead.
