Finding your way into the Vatican Museums can be confusing, so our friendly representative will be there to show you the correct entrance and help you navigate past the general admission line. You’ll be handed your skip-the-line Vatican tickets, and once inside you’ll be free to explore at your own leisure.

Sistine Chapel

See Michelangelo's masterpiece in all its glory. Fully completed in 1541, the ceiling is painted in stunning frescoes depicting scenes from throughout the Bible.

This is one of the world's most famous works of art, but it is also a functioning chapel. For this reason, speaking and photography in the chapel are prohibited, but you can purchase renderings from the gift shop as keepsakes.

Please note: As the Sistine Chapel is a place of worship, everyone who enters must cover their knees and shoulders. Otherwise, you may be refused entry to this part of the Vatican. A great option is to bring a shawl/scarf/sweater with you. That way, you can cover your knees and shoulders when necessary.

Vatican Museums

Over the centuries, the Vatican has developed one of Europe's most impressive art and history collections. In addition to Michelangelo, Raphael’s art has a strong presence too. See his great works including the School of Athens—the painting you’ll see on your Vatican tickets.

You’ll also be able to take in the Gallery of the Maps, Gallery of the Tapestries, and Gallery of the Candelabras. These galleries are absolutely worth visiting in detail, so we’d recommend taking your time.

Waited 40 minutes on line. Then another 20 in the crypt which was packed to the point of being dangerous. Had to leave as soon as we exited the crypt. Tour guide did not ask us why or offer help. A guard in the Basilica came over and saw my husband was distressed and plain overheated. . He got us a seat immediately and another guard directed us to a nearby cab. So thankful for their help.

What to bring?

We recommend bringing a water bottle and wearing some comfortable shoes for walking around. You’ll also need to cover your knees and shoulders whilst in the Vatican, so please bring a shawl/scarf to wear. Camera tripods and large backpacks aren’t allowed in the museums, so please leave them at your hotel.

Can I bring food into the Vatican?

Food is allowed in the outdoor areas of the Vatican City, but it cannot be eaten in the Vatican Museums or St. Peter’s Basilica. There are no restaurants or food shops in the city, but there are plenty of options nearby.

How will I find my way around the Vatican?

There are maps available onsite and also audio tours (for an additional small fee). Alternatively, you can join a guided Vatican touror book a private Vatican tour—this way you’ll have an expert local guide to tell you more about the history and beautiful artwork you’ll be seeing today.
