Tour Itinerary

  • 1

Your tour begins on Mount Vesuvius

Your day begins at Parcheggio Vesuvio, the official parking lot of Mount Vesuvius. We recommend booking the paid shuttle to the trailhead in advance. Or, walk from the parking to the trailhead (1.5 km (1 mi) uphill).
  • 2

Check in at Piazzale Quota 1000

At Piazzale Quota 1000, scan your prebooked ticket at the automatic gate to enter the park. This is the official start of the Gran Cono trail. Lace up, as the gravel underfoot turns loose and steep.
  • 3

    Climb the Gran Cono switchbacks

Switchback by switchback, you climb the cinder cone, a route of about 3.4 km (2.1 mi) with 173 m (568 ft) of elevation gain. The path hugs the volcano's upper flank, where steam once vented from the rock. Don’t forget to turn around and take in the views!
  • 4

Walk the rim of the active crater

Reaching the top, you trace the trail along the western rim of the Gran Cono, the great crater at Vesuvius's heart. Peer down into the steaming hollow where rock still shifts and breathes. Few places let you stand this close to a living volcano.
  • 5

Take in Gulf of Naples panoramas

From this height the whole Bay of Naples unfurls below you. Trace the Sorrento Peninsula and the island of Capri to the south, then Procida and Ischia floating offshore. On clear days, the city itself sprawls all the way to the horizon.
  • 6

Your tour ends at Parcheggio Vesuvio

After soaking up the views, retrace the trail downhill and catch the shuttle back to Parcheggio Vesuvio. Your Vesuvius visit wraps here, roughly 2 hours after you set out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this experience family-friendly?

It can be, for active families. The Gran Cono trail climbs about 3.4 km (2.1 mi) round trip with 173 m (568 ft) of elevation gain over loose volcanic gravel, so it suits children and teens who are comfortable hiking. There are no guardrails at the crater rim, so keep younger children close.

Is the trail suitable for people with mobility concerns?

This visit is not wheelchair accessible. The trail is steep and uneven, with loose gravel and no paved surface, so it isn't suitable for travelers with significant mobility limitations or for strollers.

How long does the visit take?

Plan for roughly 2.5 hours from the parking area and back, including the shuttle or walk, the climb to the rim, and time at the crater. Allow extra if you want to linger over the views.

What should I bring?

Wear sturdy closed shoes or hiking boots, and bring water, sun protection, and light layers, since the summit is cooler and windier. Carry some cash for the shuttle and parking.

Is the ticket refundable?

No, this ticket is non-refundable once booked. If the park closes the crater for safety reasons, the park runs its own closure refund procedure.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The crater can close at short notice in poor weather or for safety. Check conditions before you set out, and dress for sun and wind, as there's little shade on the trail.
