1,000+ Year History of the Palace
Skip the line and enter the 18th-century palace built by the Spanish branch of the Bourbon family. Climb the elaborate stairs towards the Throne Room where the business of royalty has taken place for nearly 300 years. Prior to the Bourbon reign, the palace had been home to a 9th-century mosque. Your guide will describe the Moorish influence on the city's culture, history, and the land where the palace was built.
The royal family no longer live here full time and the Palacio Real is now reserved for major state events, but history flows from the walls of over 3,000 rooms, including Stradivarius Hall and the Gasparini Room.
Works by Goya, Caravaggio and More
As kings and queens are known to do, Madrid's royal family has gathered a major collection of art and artifacts. With Rococo frescoes by the Venetian Tiepolo, the Italian influence in the palace is clear. Other Italian masters are present throughout the residence, most famously with Caravaggio's Salome with the Head of Saint John the Baptist.
If you also visit the Prado Museum while in Madrid, you'll be quite familiar with the impactful works of Francisco Goya. At the palace, you can examine Goya's portraits such as Charles IV in Hunting Dress and María Luisa Wearing a Mantilla.
This famous Spanish painter eventually became the Primer Pintor de Cámara (Premier Court Painter), which was the highest rank in the courts. Your guide will explain how Napoleon led Goya to change his style, world view, and sanity.
