When William the Conqueror took London in 1066, the city needed to be rebuilt, and the foundation for what we see today as the Tower of London began. Originally the political and military center of the city, it quickly turned into the prison for which it is so famous. Under Henry VIII, his wives, enemies, and former best friends were all sent to the tower, many of whom were eventually beheaded.
