Let’s Dig In!
Your Athens culinary adventure kicks off at a centrally located meeting point, where you'll be met by a warm welcome by your guide and fellow food enthusiasts. Then, as soon as everyone’s gathered, waste no time in heading to a local pie shop, which you’ll quickly discover has mastered the art of phyllo dough.
Here, you'll dig into a traditional Greek tiropita (creamy cheese pie) or spanakopita (spinach-feta pie), each bite revealing the depth of flavor and history in Greek cuisine. Watch as these iconic dishes are prepared with fresh ingredients right in front of you, and perhaps glean a few culinary tips and techniques from the experts.
The Soul of Greek Street Food
With your senses piqued and your stomach grumbling for more delights, your tour continues to a local street food joint serving up the legendary Greek souvlaki and gyros. There’s no doubt you’ll smell the mouthwatering meats well before arriving, which makes your first bite of the pork or chicken wrapped in a warm pita that much more fantastic. Enjoy the perfectly tuned balance of juicy tomatoes and homemade tzatziki sauce paired with the meat or vegetarian option, and with a cold beer to match, you’ll agree that the simplicity and richness of Greek street cuisine are unmatched.
A Stroll through Ermou Street
Next, enjoy a leisurely guided stroll through the bustling shopping district of Ermou Street, allowing time for your first dishes to settle comfortably. But don't worry, your appetite will soon be reignited for more culinary delights. Your expert food guide knows just the place to satisfy your cravings—a hidden gem among street food vendors famous for its delightful peinirli. While this dish may not have reached widespread fame, its tantalizing yet-to-be-discovered flavors make it even more appealing. Imagine a boat-shaped pizza, generously topped with cheese, traditional cold cuts or vegetables, baked to a perfectly buttery finish.
If you're wondering about something sweet, rest assured some of Athens' finest Greek donuts are up next. Known as loukoumades, these delightful desserts have a history dating back to 776 BC, coinciding with the inception of the Olympic Games in Greece. As you savor the loukoumades, drizzled with honey syrup and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, you'll understand how these tasty treats have triumphantly stood the test of time.
Psyrri's Culinary Delights
Last but certainly not least on your tour is a leisurely wander through the colorful neighborhood of Psyrri. While this area is best known for its vibrant street art and creative ambiance, those in the know will also find the heart of Athens’ street food scene here. Guided by your foodie expert, you’ll soon find yourself savoring koulouri, a traditional sesame bread ring that's a firm favorite among locals and a true staple of Athenian life. Observe as locals stop by to pick up one for a quick snack, then enjoy one yourself.
As your tour begins to wind down and your stomach nears its limit, it’s time to call upon your “separate stomach” for dessert. Select your favorite sweet treat, which will be perfectly paired with a special flavored ice cream and complemented by a local digestive liqueur. After this final indulgence, you’ll say farewell to your foodie guide as they drop you off at Monastiraki Square and set off to enjoy the remainder of your time in Athens. Yamas!
