1
Your tour begins at Caffè Vaticano
Meet your private guide at Caffè Vaticano near the Vatican Museums entrance. With timed entry and group access, you’ll bypass the chaotic independent visitor lines, though you may still wait briefly at security before your visit begins. -
2
Enter the Vatican Museums with timed entry
With your privileged entry, you glide past the main crowds and begin exploring one of the world’s most important art collections. Your private guide sets the scene for what the museums are, why they matter, and how the popes built them into a global treasure house. -
3
Walk the sculpture halls of the Pio-Clementino Museum
Step into the Pio-Clementino Museum to study iconic classical works like the Apollo Belvedere and the Belvedere Torso. As your private guide connects myth to marble, you’ll also see Nero’s massive red-marble bathtub and hear how emperors used art to project power. -
4
Explore the Gallery of Masks
Continue into the Gallery of Masks, a quieter stretch where mosaics, statues, and portraits feel far from the Vatican’s busiest corridors. With your private guide, you’ll spot the details most visitors miss, including the visual “masks” that give the gallery its name. -
5
Follow the Vatican’s grand galleries
Next, your private guide leads you through the Gallery of the Candelabra, the Gallery of the Tapestries, and the Gallery of the Maps, where decorative programs double as political messaging. As you walk, learn how these rooms were designed to impress visiting dignitaries and shape how Rome saw the world. -
6
Step inside the Raphael Rooms and Borgia Apartments
Enter the Raphael Rooms to stand before The School of Athens, where philosophy, religion, and Renaissance ambition share one wall. Then visit the Borgia Apartments with your private guide, where papal intrigue and family scandal still cling to the frescoed rooms. -
7
Take in the Sistine Chapel
Before you enter, your private guide explains Michelangelo’s ceiling and The Last Judgment so you know where to look once you’re inside. In the chapel, you experience the hush of a sacred space where speaking is not allowed, with time to absorb the scale and detail. -
8
Walk through the exclusive Scala Regia
After your silent visit, follow your guide down the Scala Regia, Bernini’s dramatic ceremonial staircase. This passage, once used by popes and kings, is reserved for guided groups, giving you a special route to your final stop. -
9
Finish inside St. Peter’s Basilica
End your private tour inside St. Peter’s Basilica, where your guide helps you read the building like a masterpiece of faith and engineering. See Bernini’s Baldacchino, locate St. Peter’s tomb below, and pause at Michelangelo’s La Pietà before exploring further on your own.

Customer Reviews
Marina was the best! Knowledgeable and very friendly. Especially helpful with accessibility as we had one in our party using a wheelchair. She knows all the shortcuts. Would definitely request her personally next trip and strongly recommend her!
Our guide Carolina was excellent. She is an art historian with an easy way of concisely delivering a lot of information. It is impossible to see everything here in a few short hours, but Carolina showed us the important pieces and explained their significance.
I’m sure you will not find a better host for a private tour of the Vatican. Bogdan was knowledgeable, experienced, engaging, accommodating and fun. It was certainly the best investment of our time and money. We came away with a better understanding and appreciation of Vatican history. If you book your Vatican tour with the Tour Guy, ask for Bogdan!!
Eleonora was a great guide! Her passion made everything better for us. We were feeding off her energy. Incredibly knowledgeable and she helped us maximize our time in what could have been an overwhelming experience without her. Perfecto!
Frequently Asked Questions
What to bring?
In addition to wearing or bringing clothing that covers your knees and shoulders, it's recommended to wear comfortable shoes. You're also welcome to bring a water bottle as it can get hot inside the Vatican during the summer months.
Is there a dress code to enter the religious sites on this tour?
We ask both men and women to cover knees and shoulders, otherwise you may be refused entry to certain religious sites and miss out on a portion of your tour. We understand the summers in Rome can be hot, so a great alternative is to bring a shawl/scarf/sweater with you. That way, you can cover your knees and shoulders when necessary.
What are the chances my tour will be canceled or the Vatican will close something.
Although it is rare, sometimes part of the Vatican closes with little notice. If an area normally covered on a tour is closed, your guide will be sure to make up the time in other areas.
Does the tour go in without waiting in lines?
As an accredited tour operator we do not have to wait in the general ticket line, but we still have to wait in a security line after our timed-ticket entry. For this reason, we leave the meeting point as early as possible and get in the security line reserved for tour operators before the general public.
Does this tour always include St. Peter's Basilica?
St. Peter's is always included on this private Vatican Museums tour, except on Wednesdays & Saturdays when it is closed in the morning for the papal audience.
What to bring?
In addition to wearing or bringing clothing that covers your knees and shoulders, it's recommended to wear comfortable shoes. You're also welcome to bring a water bottle as it can get hot inside the Vatican during the summer months.
I have some doubts about my mobility. Is this tour right for me?
If you have any doubts about your mobility, this is your best bet for a Vatican tour. Private Vatican tours are more easily customized to the needs of people with reduced mobility. For guests in need of a mobility accessible tour, please note that the Scala Regia, connecting the Sistine Chapel to the Basilica, is not mobility accessible due to the stairs. On mobility accessible private Vatican tours, St. Peter's Basilica will be entered with your guide at the end of the tour from the St. Peter's Square entrance. Please notify us of all mobility concerns in advance at support@thetourguy.com.
Is photography allowed in the Sistine Chapel?
No photography is allowed inside the Sistine Chapel.
Can I join a group tour of the Vatican instead?
Sure! If you'd like a more affordable option, check out our Privileged Entrance Vatican Tour.
