Welcome to the Appian Way

Ready to walk where emperors once strolled? Grab your cappuccino, lace up your comfiest shoes, and meet your guide at 9:30 am for an adventure back in time. We’ll send you all the details and the kicking-off point ahead of time, so all you need to bring is yourself and a sense of curiosity for Rome’s hidden gems.

First on the list: the Appian Way. Although much of this ancient road lies in ruins today, its historical significance is undeniable. From 312 BC until the fall of the Roman Empire, the Appian Way served as Rome’s main artery, connecting the city to far-reaching territories. Today, you'll explore well-preserved sections of this ancient highway alongside a guide who has all the insights to bring its stories to life.

Walk Amid Roman Ruins

Once everyone has arrived and the meet and greets are out of the way, it’s time to get exploring. Your first stop is the towering Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella, a remarkable structure built in the 1st century BC. Rising 70 feet into the air, this monument was commissioned to honor Cecilia Metella, a noblewoman from one of Rome’s most powerful families. Your guide will explain the significance of this massive tomb and how it stands as a lasting tribute to her prominence and family’s influence.

Next, you’ll come across the Circus of Maxentius. Although much less popular than Rome’s Circus Maximus, this chariot racing stadium is much better preserved. Still standing are portions of the starting gates and the central barrier that chariots would race around. You’ll also see parts of the spectator stands, although they are mostly in ruins.

A short walk away awaits the Mausoleum of Romulus, built by Emperor Maxentius to honor his only son Valerius Romulus. Struck by grief after his son's premature death, Maxentius ordered the creation of this grand monument as a lasting tribute to his memory.

Catacombs of San Sebastian

Now, it’s time to trade the sunlit Via Appia for the cool, underground world of the Catacombs of San Sebastian. Established in the 2nd century AD, these catacombs were not only burial grounds but also a place of refuge and worship for early Christians during times of persecution.

Your guide will lead you through the dimly lit tunnels, where you'll see early Christian tombs and symbols carved into the walls. This is where Rome’s first Christians found a safe haven to worship in secret, and you’ll learn about the challenges they faced and their unwavering faith.

What if I have concerns about my mobility on this tour?

If you have any doubts about your mobility, please let us know beforehand. This tour includes about two hours of walking, and unfortunately, the catacombs are not wheelchair accessible due to architectural constraints.

What happens if it rains?

We run our Appian Way and Catacombs walking tour rain or shine. If the weather is extremely bad and we cannot proceed with the tour, we'll let you know as soon as possible.

Is there any chance my tour might be canceled?

Is there a dress code for this Appian Way and Catacombs walking tour?

We ask both men and women to cover their knees and shoulders and suggest wearing comfortable, athletic clothing. Keep in mind that the temperature inside the catacombs is 61ºF (16ºC), so you may want to bring some layers.

How comprehensive is the walking tour portion of this tour?

In the spirit of seeing as much of Rome’s Appian Way as possible, we will not be stopping at every site. You'll still get to admire the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella, the Circus of Maxentius, the Mausoleum of Romulus, and more.

Is breakfast or lunch included in the price of the tour?

Food is not included in the price of this tour, and we recommend enjoying breakfast before joining. We're also happy to recommend one of our favorite restaurants after the tour, and your guide is sure to point you in the right direction, too.

Are drinks included in the price of the tour?

No, but if you bike up a thirst, our guides are happy to recommend a good spot to grab a drink after the tour. We recommend bringing water with you, as you'll be walking for approximately two hours.

Can I bring my kids, and do I have to pay for them?

Yes, everyone is welcome on our Appian Way and Catacombs walking tour. We also offer a discounted rate for those aged 12 years and younger and children five and under are free.

Why do I have to pay for my child who's under 12 years old?

We charge a discounted rate to anyone between the ages of 6 and 12. This is because we limit the total number of guests on each departure, which includes children, and only a certain number of tickets are sold for the catacombs each day.
