Meet Your Guide in front of the Brera Gallery
Your day begins outside the entrance of the grand Palazzo Brera. Formerly a palace, religious institution, and Jesuit college, the building now holds the great collection of the Brera Gallery. Your art historian guide will lead you into the courtyard beginning your tour of Milanese art and culture.
Courtyard of the Brera Palace
As you enter the courtyard of the Gallery, see the bronze copy of Canova's Napoleon as Mars the Peacemaker. Learn about the controversy of this statue, both the original and this specific copy that was cast in 1811. Sculpted from the cannons of Castel Sant Angelo, these statues angered 19th century leaders from Pope's to Kings. Your expert guide will describe this incredible story in full.
See Paintings by Caravaggio, Raphael, and a Different Last Supper
Once inside the Brera Gallery see works by Renaissance and Baroque masters. Though the most famous painting of the Last Supper is found across town in the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie, Da Vinci's is not the only great representation. See the famous Dutchman Peter Paul Rubens' smaller depiction right in the Brera Gallery.
Hayez' The Kiss and the Italian Risorgimento
Inside the Brera Gallery, observe stunning works including Francesco Hayez' The Kiss. This intense painting is one of the best examples of 19th century Romanticism and has great meaning in Italy. The 1859 painting is an important symbol of the Risorgimento spirit that led the Italians to independence from Austria in 1861.
Explore the Streets and Sights of the Brera District
After taking in the majestic collection of the Pinacoteca di Brera, embark on a scenic walking tour through the Brera neighborhood. Home to Milan's rich and famous you may happen upon an Italian celebrity or fashion executive. Stroll through the streets of boutiques, restaurants and Italianate style buildings that make Brera a center of culture and style.
At the end of the tour your guide will provide wonderful recommendations to continue your discovery of Brera and the city of Milan.
