Since it's a private tour, you’re free to point out your must-see spots, or let your guide do the honors and show off their favorite hidden gems.
Glide Through the Historic Baixa District
As you begin your journey through the Baixa District, you'll immediately notice the grandeur of Avenida da Liberdade, one of Lisbon’s most iconic streets. This tree-lined boulevard, often compared to Paris’s Champs-Élysées, is home to the who’s who in terms of fashion stores--take note of any you might want to come back to check out later!
Continuing onward, cruise around Praça dos Restauradores, a bustling square that commemorates Portugal’s independence from Spain, and check out the unique wave-like pavements of Rossio Square, considered the very center of the city and a lively place at any time of the day. You’ll also pause to admire the sprawling Praça do Comércio and to capture a photo with the imposing 100 feet high Arco da Rua Augusta and its magnificent figures above. Along the way, your guide will share stories about the district’s rebirth after the devastating 1755 earthquake.
Discover the Charm of Alfama
From Baixa’s broad boulevards, you’ll zip into Lisbon's oldest neighborhood Alfama with its labyrinth of twisty streets, hidden courtyards and breathtaking miradouros (scenic viewpoints or lookouts, typically located in elevated areas). You’ll soon spot the grand Lisbon Cathedral towering above, its worn stone walls revealing clues to the past. Your guide will fill in the details, sharing stories of the cathedral’s 12th-century origins and its role as a symbol of Christian triumph. Further along, the National Pantheon rises with its impressive dome, where notable figures like the “Queen of Fado” and Presidents Braga and Carmona have found their final resting places.
Ascend to Lisbon’s Most Scenic Viewpoints
Although it may be hard to believe, it’s time to keep going up. But don’t worry, the tuk tuk is doing all the hard work and before long, you’ll find yourself in the Graça neighborhood. Perched atop Lisbon's hills, it is a charming blend of tradition and stunning vistas. Roll to a stop at the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte viewpoint, where you’ll have a spectacular vista over Lisbon’s iconic red rooftops and the Tagus River.
Next, glide through the lively Chiado district, known for its stylish boutiques and hip cafes, and into Bairro Alto, one of Lisbon’s most famous nightlife hubs. A brief stop at the Miradouro São Pedro de Alcântara gives you another fantastic viewpoint, offering a different perspective of Lisbon’s beautiful skyline including the majestic São Jorge Castle.
End on a High Note at Parque Eduardo VII
Your tuk tuk tour may be winding down, but there’s still time to squeeze in one last epic view. You'll arrive at Parque Eduardo VII, a peaceful green space in the heart of the city. This park is one of Lisbon’s largest, offering expansive views of the city and the Tagus River from its highest point.
Lastly, as you head back to where the fun all began, your guide will share some final local insights to help you make the most of your remaining time in Lisbon. Be sure to inquire about a great place to grab lunch or dinner—you deserve it after all the exploring!
