Kick Things Off in the Baixa neighborhood with a bifana!
Your foodie excursion begins just early enough to beat the late morning crowds but late enough to enjoy a nice sleep-in. Look for your guide and fellow foodies near the towering obelisk and be sure to arrive hungry to the Restauradores Square, located at the southeast end of Avenida da Liberdade, near Rossio square. After meet and greets are out of the way, you’ll dive right into Lisbon’s famed cuisine.
First up, dig into a classic bifana, a beloved and spiced Portuguese street food. The dish is a matter of national pride in Portugal, and it’s made with pork chops, steak, or loin, pounded thin or sliced, simmered with garlic and wine, then sandwiched inside heated bread.Since it’s never too early to enjoy a drink in Lisbon, why not wash it down with an ice-cold beer?
Zip Around Lisbon in a Tuk Tuk
Fueled up, it’s time for the next part of the adventure: a tuk tuk tour! Lisbon’s hilly streets and narrow lanes are not for the faint of heart, but with a tuk tuk doing the hard work, you can sit back and enjoy the ride up and down the narrow streets and between intriguing neighborhoods.
Pass by the famous area of Alfama, the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon and the birthplace of Fado music, home to landmarks like the Lisbon Cathedral and São Jorge Castle. It offers a genuine, charming atmosphere with traditional food and vibrant local life. Located close to Lisbon's Downtown, it is known for its many viewpoints, which offer a unique view of the city, as well as churches and museums.
A highlight is sure to be the majestic Lisbon Cathedral, a Romanesque masterpiece that has weathered time since the 12th century. You’ll also zip to Miradouro da Senhora do Monte which is located at the highest point of the Bairro da Graça and is one of the best spots for panoramic views of the city, particularly overlooking Mouraria, São Jorge Castle and Igreja de São Vicente de Fora.
Taste Your Way Through Mouraria
There's no forgetting this is a food tour! Throughout your tuk-tuk ride, you'll hop off to explore some of your guide's favorite local spots. In Mouraria, you'll enjoy three more traditional Portuguese treats, each showcasing the city’s unique culinary heritage. A cheese board featuring local specialties and peixinhos da horta—a delicious snack of blanched green beans coated in a light batter and deep-fried—highlight Lisbon's ability to blend tradition with modern flair.
Sit back as your guide shares why Mouraria remains a hidden gem for both food lovers and history buffs. Listen closely to fascinating insights into the neighborhood's rich Moorish heritage and its vibrant present-day charm. Mouraria is one of Lisbon’s most traditional and multicultural neighborhoods—a lively area where over 50 nationalities coexist.
Wine, Beer, and Local Cherry Liqueur
If you haven’t noticed by now, alcohol and Lisbon go hand in hand, and no matter the time of day, you’ll see locals posted up and chatting over a drink. Throughout this tour, you’ll do the same. From crisp green wine to the city’s much-loved and delicious cherry liqueur, ginjinha, you’ll get a taste of what locals love to sip throughout the day. And don’t worry, if wine’s not your thing, Lisbon’s craft beer scene is equally tempting.
By the time your tour wraps up at Praça da Figueira, in the center of Lisbon, you’ll have a deeper understanding of Lisbon’s rich food and drink culture and local history—and maybe a new favorite wine or two! From robust reds like Dão and Alentejo to crisp, refreshing whites like Vinho Verde, Portugal offers a diverse range of wines to suit every palate. And don’t forget ginja, a sweet, cherry-infused liqueur typically served in a small chocolate cup or glass, which has been a beloved Lisbon treat for centuries
