Uncover the mystical history of Montserrat

Once you arrive, your guide will take you through the rich history of Montserrat, from its mystical origins to its religious importance. Montserrat Abbey is a stunning Benedictine monastery located atop Montserrat Mountain, and one of the most iconic and visited religious sites in the region, known not only for its spiritual significance but also for its breathtaking natural surroundings. The origins of Montserrat Abbey date back to the 9th century when, according to the legend, a group of shepherds discovered a small wooden statue of the Virgin Mary, known as La Moreneta (the Black Madonna), hidden in a cave. This miraculous discovery led to the establishment of the monastery, which became a center for pilgrimage and devotion. Over the centuries, the abbey has expanded and evolved, playing a key role in the religious and cultural life of Catalonia.

The panoramic views from the mountain are nothing short of spectacular, offering sweeping vistas of the Catalan countryside, rugged cliffs, and lush forests below.

On your journey back to Barcelona and the original meeting point, your guide will continue to captivate you with fascinating stories and legends about the mountain, the Monastery, and its spiritual significance. The return trip offers a chance to relax and reflect on the extraordinary experience you’ve just had, connecting with nature, history, and spirituality

We arrived at the designated time 9:15 and no one was there. The tour guide didn’t ask us our names, didn’t have an ID and we weren’t given the choice to go up to the Black Madonna. She chose for us to hear the choir instead. It felt like she was a fill in guide who wasn’t familiar with the tour we chose.
