Dalí Theatre-Museum
Your journey begins with a comfortable ride from Carrer Palau de la Música, 1 in central Barcelona to Figueres, Salvador Dalí’s birthplace and home to the extraordinary Dalí Theatre-Museum, an essential destination for anyone fascinated by the surreal. Designed by Dalí himself atop the ruins of the town’s old theater, the museum is a surrealist artwork in its own right. From the iconic façade topped with giant eggs and dotted with golden bread rolls, to its labyrinth of exhibits inside, the space is as eccentric and theatrical as the artist behind it.
Inside, you’ll explore the world’s largest collection of Dalí’s work, including paintings, installations, sculptures, and optical illusions that play with perception and meaning. One highlight is the Mae West room, a space that transforms into the actress's face when viewed from a special vantage point. Guided by an expert, you’ll dive deep into Dalí’s techniques, personal life, and the symbolism that shaped his legacy, making this more than just a museum visit, but a full immersion into the mind of a modern genius.
Cadaqués and Portlligat
After exploring the surreal world of Dalí, your journey continues to the picturesque coastal village of Cadaqués. This charming village, with its whitewashed Mediterranean houses, narrow cobbled streets, and peaceful bay, is one of the most beautiful spots on the Costa Brava. Dalí himself once described it as “the most beautiful village in the world,” and it’s easy to see why. As you travel through the scenic mountains, enjoy stunning views of the Catalan countryside.
Upon arrival, you’ll have free time to relax and explore. Indulge in a delicious seafood lunch (not included) at one of the local terraces overlooking the Mediterranean, or grab a snack and stroll the charming streets. This village has long been an artist’s haven, and it’s not hard to understand how its natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere inspired Dalí and many other great artists.
In the afternoon, you’ll continue to Portlligat, a small fishing village just up the coast. Here, Dalí and his wife Gala made their home, and it was in this quiet place that Dalí created some of his most iconic works. He purchased a simple fisherman’s hut in 1930, which he slowly transformed into a surrealist masterpiece, both his home and studio. The house still contains Dalí’s original furniture and décor, offering a unique insight into his life and artistic process. With its labyrinthine design and artistic touches, the house is an intimate reflection of Dalí’s mind, and a visit here offers an emotional connection to the artist’s personal world.
Costa Brava
During the summer months, when the road to Cadaqués is often heavily congested, the tour takes an equally enriching alternate route that explores more of Dalí’s creative legacy and the beauty of the Costa Brava. Your afternoon begins in the peaceful village of Púbol, where you’ll have time to enjoy lunch at a traditional Catalan restaurant before visiting Púbol Castle, a Gothic-Renaissance gem that Dalí lovingly restored as a gift to his wife, Gala. The castle houses original frescoes, antique furnishings, and the crypt where Gala now rests, offering a poignant glimpse into Dalí’s personal world.
From Púbol, the tour continues to one of the charming coastal villages along the Costa Brava, a region Dalí often visited during the 1930s. With its pine-covered cliffs, transparent waters, and untouched natural beauty, the coastline remains remarkably similar to the one Dalí experienced. Take time to walk along the shore, soak in the Mediterranean views, and reflect on the surreal journey of the day. You’ll return to Plaça Catalunya in Barcelona by early evening, ending the experience with easy access to transportation and local dining options.
