Scenic drive to Meteora

Your journey begins in the heart of Athens at Larissis Train Station, where you’ll meet your local guide and group before setting off in a modern, air-conditioned bus. As the cityscape fades, you’ll travel through the rolling hills and traditional villages of central Greece. Along the way, enjoy a short break to stretch your legs, grab a coffee, and take in the changing scenery.

In the 14th century, monks seeking refuge from the turmoil of the Byzantine Empire began building monasteries on these isolated rocks, and by the 16th century, Meteora became a major center of Eastern Orthodox monasticism. Today, six active monasteries remain, each offering a unique insight into centuries of religious devotion, architectural achievement, and the spiritual history of Greece. The region is not only a place of profound beauty but also a testament to the monks’ determination and ingenuity in creating a retreat from the outside world.

The monastic marvels of Meteora

Arriving in Meteora, you’ll be greeted by one of the most jaw-dropping landscapes in Greece—massive rock pillars rising hundreds of meters into the sky, crowned by ancient monasteries that seem to defy gravity.

Though there were once as many as 24 built on the towering rock formations, over time, many of the monasteries were abandoned, but the ones that remain active continue to serve as places of worship and pilgrimage and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for their historical and architectural significance.

Throughout the day, you’ll admire all eight monasteries from the outside, with your local guide explaining their history and significance. The largest and perhaps most famous is the Monastery of Great Meteoron, that offers breathtaking views, while the Monastery of Varlaam is known for its frescoes and the Monastery of Rousanou for its peaceful allure.

We have partnered with a local company, based in Meteora, to ensure an authentic, unforgettable experience. You’ll step inside three of the most extraordinary monasteries, where centuries-old frescoes, intricate wood carvings, and sacred relics tell the story of the monks who built and maintained them.

Varlaam monastery & panoramic viewpoints

Varlaam Monastery, the second largest in Meteora, is renowned for its stunning frescoes and well-preserved artifacts. As you wander through its peaceful courtyards, your guide will share the remarkable tale of two monks who built it nearly 700 years ago, hoisting materials up the cliffside by hand. From here, you’ll visit carefully selected panoramic viewpoints, offering picture-perfect views of Meteora’s rock formations and all eight monasteries in one sweeping glance.

During the tour, you’ll have free time to enjoy lunch at your own pace. You can either choose to explore local eateries on your own or join the group for lunch at a traditional taverna in Meteora, where you can savor authentic Greek dishes. Lunch is not included, allowing you the flexibility to select the option that best fits your preferences and budget.

The Hermit Caves of Badovas & return to Athens

Before monasteries stood atop the cliffs, the first monks lived in the rugged caves of Badovas, seeking complete isolation from the outside world. You’ll explore these hidden dwellings and hear the fascinating stories of the hermits who survived in these harsh conditions. As the day comes to an end, relax on the return journey to Athens, reflecting on the incredible history and beauty of Meteora. You’ll arrive back at Larissis Train Station in the evening, carrying memories of a truly one-of-a-kind adventure.

This tour has it's good side and bad side. I booked a 10 hour tour but it ended up being 14.5 hours. Let me elaborate. The bad side is the bus tour. You get on the bus at 7:45am, but the bus driver doesn't tell you what is happening. After about 2 hours, you stop is a small seaside town for snacks/coffee but there are so many people that you end up lining up just to get anything in that one restaurant. It's better if you just go to another restaurant nearby and get the snacks. Then it's another 2 hours before you get to Meteora. Then, there is a lunch (if you opted for it). I didn't choose the lunch on my tour because I read the reviews. It's a restaurant, but it's like you are in a canteen - you have to line up with all the other people and pick your dishes from what is already prepared and placed under heat lamps. Then, it seemed like the people had to gulp down their food. If you wanted to have the lunch option, it was another $50CDN on top of the regular tour. I don't think the food was worth $50CDN from the looks of it. Then you visit several monasteries, some of which require some hiking up the side of the hills. Again, you have to rush up and rush back down as there are many tours happening at the same time. Moreover, you have to pay 5 euros for each monastery that you visit. I hope that money is used in the upkeep of each monastery. By the time you see or visit the monasteries, it is 5:30pm, and then you begin the arduous journey of driving 2 hours back to the restaurant we stopped at in the morning. It is an Italian restaurant, and you had to preorder your food. I didn't come to Athens to eat Italian food. I could have gone to another restaurant, but the greek service and hospitality is not rush and laid back - not conducive if you only have 45 minutes to order and eat a meal. However, I thought maybe I might get a small bite. The restaurant was so busy with the two tour busses. I was the first to be seated, but after waiting about 10 minutes, no one came back - they were busy serving the people who had preordered their Italian meals. This dinner was not included in the original tour price. I walked out of the restaurant and chose to walk the serene water front and chose to wait to get dinner in Athens. The restaurant patrons had only 40 minutes to get their food, and scarf it down - not the most appealing thing to do. We are back on the bus for another 2 more hours, and we finally arrive in Athens at 10:30pm. Overall, the best part was our tour guide Maria - she was funny and quite knowledgeable. The sightseeing of the monasteries was awe inspiring, and if you have good weather, the photos ops are amazing. But you aren't allowed to take any photos inside each monastery. The down side - the long bus rides with stops at restaurants that aren't great, and quite rushed. It's a fine balance that the tour company could do tweaks if they want to make the experience better for all.
