Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn
The master Dutch artist who painted the The Night Watch and Marten and Oopjen amongst many more amazingly never left the Netherlands. Though his Baroque masterpieces seem to take influence from Caravaggio in the use of the "chiaroscuro", he was mainly influenced by the Dutch disciples of Caravaggio who practiced Utrecht Caravaggism. You will see many of Rembrandt's greatest works including our first stop The Night Watch.
Vermeer
Like many great artists throughout history, Vermeer was not famous during his life. A man who died in debt leaving behind 10 children, he did not live a life of luxury. For over 200 years, the art of Vermeer was either undiscovered or attributed to other artists. It is unsure how many paintings Vermeer created, the confirmed number is 34. To put this into perspective, Van Gogh painted at least 43 self portraits in only 4 years. So much mystery surrounds the incredible Vermeer, who would have never known that one of his paintings would even inspire a major motion picture. On tour you will see The Milkmaid, considered a Baroque masterpiece it is a wonderful example of how Vermeer created such elegance and depth from real working people.
Cuypers Library
Passed by most tourists without batting an eye, the Rijksmuseum library is the largest in the Netherlands. With a stunning spiral staircase between levels, it is a library meant for a movie. You will visit the grand collection of books and materials art students in the Netherlands have been studying since 1885.
Other Works
In addition to the paintings by the two Dutch masters, you will see works by other great artists who called the Netherlands home. These great painters include Vincent Van Gogh, Jan Steen, Lucas van Leyden and Hendrick Avercamp.
