On the "Detailed Itinerary Vatican Tour", our guides will not only take you to see all of the best highlights in the Vatican, but they'll also be relaying to you the most interesting and bizarre stories of the Vatican, its religion, the Pope's, the artists and the works of art along the way. So, if the Vatican is an attraction you've been wanting to experience in full, then this is the tour for you.
The early start time of this tour because The Roman Guy gains special privileges at the Vatican, as an accredited Vatican tour provider. This means we can skip the long lines and enter the museums a whole hour before the general public. The tour route begins at the Sistine Chapel, so you can enjoy it when it's practically empty. We then circle back through the Vatican Museums, visiting many galleries and famous works of art along the way before re-entering the Sistine Chapel and then skipping the line through a special door to access St. Peter's Basilica.
Guide. Tickets and Admission are included.
When you meet our guide outside the Vatican museums, you'll be given a detailed explanation of the Sistine Chapel. This explanation happens in advance of us entering as nobody is permitted to speak inside the sacred Chapel. But don't worry about having to remember everything! Our guides are prepared with visual handouts for you to keep, so whatever interesting tales you hear prior to entering will come alive inside, as you identify everything using your special The Roman Guy handout.
Remember that the Sistine Chapel is inside the Vatican Museums and included in your Vatican tour tickets.
Arranged through a series of rooms, in chronological order and divided by art school, the Pinacoteca is home to some of the most impressive paintings in the Vatican. Our guide will lead you through these rooms, introducing you to works of art dating between the 12th and 19th century. During this part of your Vatican tour, you'll get up close to masterpieces painted by the likes of Caravaggio, Raphael, Titian, Leonardo, Guido Reni and Giotto.
This room inside the Vatican Museums is rarely visited by tour groups and we like to call it our hidden gem room! You'll get to see how the Pope's of the past once traveled in style and how today's Popemobiles are the Vatican's answer to the Batmobile.
Now, it's time to visit two of the most iconic works of art in the world. These two statues are not only famous in their own right, but they sit within an octagonal courtyard designed by famous painter and architect - Bramante Lazzari. If you haven't guessed them already, the statues we are referring to are: the Apollo Belvedere, Laocoon and his sons and the Belvedere Torso.
Our guide will explain the myths and legends associated with these mystical statues, before taking you to visit one of the biggest and oldest bathtubs you'll have ever seen. Once belonging to emperor Nero, you'll soon find out that this is more than just a tub to soak in. This tub stretches a whopping 25ft in diameter and is made from a material so precious that there is no way the tub can ever be recreated. NB: relaxing bubble baths are not included in this tour, although it would make for a great photo.
The museums are packed with priceless works of art, illusions and tales of Pope's. You'll visit galleries such as the Candelabra Gallery, Gallery of the Tapestries, Gallery of the Maps and Raphael Rooms. Inside each room, our guide will take you to the most intriguing and iconic works of art. Each piece has a story to tell, but if we told you them all then you'd spend months inside the museums! Our guides have selected the best of the best and will focus your time on the pieces that you'll remember and that have the greatest significance.
In the Gallery of Maps, you'll be surrounded by painted historical maps of Italy. You can see how the country has changed over the years, but there's one thing that is particularly peculiar about these maps. Make sure you pay attention or try and spot it yourself. You'll then visit the Gallery of Tapestries, possibly the coldest room in the Vatican state. The temperature of this room has to be kept steady and no flash photography is permitted. This is to help preserve the delicate materials used to hand stitch each tapestry that adorn the walls of the room. Watch out for the optical illusion!
What does the word Renaissance mean? Raphael was one of Rome's greatest and most famous artists, and he was really a Renaissance man. Some call him a "playboy" and you'll find out why as you walk through the rooms he decorated for the Pope's own personal chambers. One of the most iconic pieces you'll get to see is The School of Athens. See if you can find the depiction of Raphael's rival, Michelangelo, within it.
If you've ever seen St Peter's Basilica from the square outside, you'll probably have seen the lines of people waiting to get inside. Our group will get special access to St Peter's through a special door with our guide. The Roman Guy doesn't like waiting in line and doesn't feel you should have to when you're on vacation!
As you walk in through the massive front entrance, you'll immediately understand the extent of work that has gone into creating this marvelous Basilica and work of art. Inside, you will see some highlights with your guide such as the Baldacchino, La Pieta, the Statue of St. Peter and other masterpieces.
Before ending your tours, our gudie will take you underneath St Peter's, into the Papal crypts.
IMPORTANT: From the St. Peter's Basilica you will be unable to return to the Vatican Museums. If you would like to spend more time inside the museums you will need to forgo the Basilica on the tour. Inform your guide at the beginning of the tour and remember not to go with the group to St. Peter's Basilica or else you won't be able to re-enter the museums. If you would like to stay in the St. Peter's Basilica longer DO NOT leave with the guide to take photos in the piazza. The security line is long and re-entry on your own is not recommended. We recommend you stay and explore on your own after finishing the tour.
Want to climb the Dome of St Peter's? Before leaving the Basilica at the end of your tour, ask our guide to point you towards where you can gain access to St Peter's Dome. It's quite a climb, but if you have time after your tour, then we highly recommend it - the view is spectacular!
