In October 2017, the Colosseum announced the opening of their fourth and fifth tiers. Now, these recently reconstructed levels are accessible by special reservation. Why would you visit these areas? Well, the Colosseum’s top tier experiences, known as the Colosseum Belvedere experience or tour, give visitors the best views. You can see down into the ancient stadium and take in spectacular views out over the Eternal City!
What are the Colosseum Belvedere Areas?
In Ancient Rome, where you sat in the Colosseum was dependent on wealth, social status and gender. The 4th and 5th levels were reserved for women and the poor. These seats were classified as “the cheap seats” as they were the furthest away from the games. Many claim that women were placed high up to keep them as far away as possible from the strong, muscular gladiators they admired!
When you visit the Colosseum Belvedere areas, you’ll access the 4th and 5th levels. You skip the line, climb all the way up and see exactly what it would be like to watch games form this height. Women and the poor may not have been up close to the action in ancient Rome, but “WOW”, those views.
If you want to find out more about the other levels of the Colosseum and what they were used for, check out our “What is happening with the Colosseum Top Tier?” post.
Belvedere means ‘beautiful sight’ in Italian, and is an architectural structure built to take advantage of a scenic view.
In the past, those who sat in the Belvedere area of the Colosseum couldn’t see much of the action. They envied all the people sat below. Today it’s a whole other story! As such a new opportunity for travelers to access this area and experience these incredible views, we would say that the tables have definitely turned! The 5th tier is the place to be!
On the NEW Colosseum Belvedere Tour you will visit the 3rd, 4th and 5th levels of the Colosseum. You’ll get the BEST views of the Colosseum, Roman Forums and Rome. This express tour lasts 1.5 hours and includes entry to the Roman Forum (without a guided tour). You can find out more about the experience by clicking the link above.
No matter how you decide to experience the Colosseum this year, we recommend you bring the following:
- a bottle of water
- comfortable shoes
- an umbrella (for shade or protection from the rain)
- your camera!
